assistance of a subsidy from Government. It has
therefore been necessary to make provision for the work to be done departmentally.
Head 27, Defence.
Provision is made under Item 25 for 2
armoured cars, bringing the number up to 6, which
is considered to be the minimum necessary.
It is clear that the amounts provided under
the Special Expenditure Sub-Heads throughout the
Estimates have been reduced to a minimum.
Head 34, Public Works Extraordinary
•
Generally, no new major works are to be
undertaken and expenditure under several Sub-Heads
has been considerably reduced.
Sub-Head 3. The insertion of the Item of
$80,000 for continuing the work on the Market at
Wanchai has been noted above.
Sub-Head 8, Trade School. The preparation of working plans and of the proposal to carry out
preliminary work on the site of the new Trade School
was approved in 4 on 33813/34. The Building
Contractors Association has undertaken to carry out
the work at cost price and at(3)in the above file
we were informed that the maximum cost had been
estimated provisionally at $180,000 as against the P.W.D estimate of $260,000. The latter figure is
given in the Estimates as the total cost of the work, though $60,000 only is provided for 1935;
no doubt the total estimate will be reduced if and
when that carse proves to be possible.
